"Pig-nosed turtles are considered unique and unusual among species of freshwater turtles in many respects, their ecology and behavior of different morphology," said Carla Eisemberg from the University of Canberra, Australia quoted as BBC Nature, Friday (8 / 7 / 2011).

However, demand for turtle eggs and meat in one of the main house turtles in Papua New Guinea, have caused this dramatic species consumed by the indigenous communities and this allows the extinction in this type of turtle populations.

"pig-nosed turtle is considered unique and unusual among species of freshwater turtles in many respects, their ecology and behavior of different morphology," said Carla Eisemberg from the University of Canberra, Australia quoted as BBC Nature, Friday (8 / 7 / 2011).

For example, pig-nosed turtle embryos become male or female egg depending on soil temperature where they are placed, while the embryo is in full bloom can delay their hatching.

Pig-nosed turtles also attracted the attention of scientists because of its unique position in the family tree turtles. This is the only turtle families who stayed and referred to the Carettochelyidae, and has a limited global distribution, which is only found in northern Australia and Papua New Guinea.

"conservation plan to save the turtles are urgently needed, and if applied, will take decades for the pig-nosed turtle population to recover. But this article should be done sensitively, as some indigenous communities living in the wild pig-nosed turtles often rely on protein from the reptile to survive, "said the scientists.
