40 of Indonesia's best dishes

Sambal, martabak, rendang: If you can read this list without drooling you're doing better than us
After CNNGo readers voted rendang the most delicious food in the world, we thought it was time to give Indonesia's culinary credentials some time in the limelight.
Here we run through a mouth-watering array of broth-soaked noodles, fiery curries, banana-wrapped fish and vegetable salads with sweet peanut dressing. Most of the recommended restaurants are in Jakarta, a magnet for Indonesians from all over the archipelago, who naturally brought their cuisine with them.

Sambal
The king of condiments -- a foodstuff all to itself.

1. Sambal

While technically more of a condiment, the chili-based sauce known as sambal is a staple at all Indonesian tables.
Dishes are not complete unless they have a hearty dollop of the stuff, a combination of chilies, sharp fermented shrimp paste, tangy lime juice, sugar and salt all pounded up with mortar and pestle.
So beloved is sambal, some restaurants have made it their main attraction, with options that include young mango, mushroom and durian.

40 Singapore foods we can't live without

From Katong laksa in the east to Indian-Muslim fare in the west, here are 40 foods that define Singapore's culinary character
By Catherine Ling

So what Singapore food can you eat day after day after day?
Singaporeans are simply obsessed with eating. For the best food, they will queue endlessly, they will traverse the island, and they will eat at all hours. Many have been known to come back after migrating simply because they miss their favorite foods. Much of it is humble but insanely delicious street fare found in food centers and coffee shops throughout the island.
CNNGo rounds up 40 of the best, "die-die must-try" foods from the little red dot.

1. Chicken rice

It’s everywhere -- at hawker stalls, food courts, luxury hotels and even at the zoo, but Singaporeans just can’t get enough of it. Chicken rice is often called the “national dish” of Singapore. Steamed or boiled chicken is served atop fragrant oily rice, with sliced cucumber as the token vegetable. Variants include roasted chicken or soy sauce chicken. Don’t miss out on the dipping sauces -- premium dark soy sauce, chili with garlic, and pounded ginger. Play around with different combinations to discover new tastes.

World's 50 most delicious foods

What are the world's most delicious foods? We thought we knew. Apparently we don't.
Our list of the World's 50 most delicious foods stimulated some impassioned debate about the conspicuous lack of French dishes and the merits of ketchup over mayonnaise.
“Ketchup? Pop Corn? Chips? Plenty of Thai but few Malay food? What about Chinese (Sichuan, Cantonese, etc)? No Brazilian or Argentinean?” queried commenter Max.
Reader LoveFoods wrote, "OMG why are people hating? If you don't like the list, make your own! I love Thai andJapanese foods."
LoveFoods was right. So we threw it open to a vote on a Facebook poll.
And now, after more than 35,000 votes, it appears we got it all wrong. The world’s most delicious food is not Massamancurry, as we suggested, but a meaty, spicy, gingery dish from west Sumatra.
Couscous and lemon curd cake both took scores of votes, but didn't make the list. Some 439 people thought gelatodeserved a place in online history.
The top 50 foods according to CNNGo readers are below. Bon appetit.

Goi cuon

49. Lechon, Philippines

Great way to kick off this list.

As with most wet markets in Asia, morning is the busiest time at Little India's Tekka Market. This sprawling two-story building brims with traders peddling everything from vegetables, to fruits, meats and even obscure ingredients for ethnic food.

http://i.cdn.cnngo.com/sites/default/files/imagecache/624x468_gallery/2011/06/12/624.02.jpg“This market is like Singapore -- it has international appeal”, says Ida, who operates one of the 300 or so stalls here. “There's Vietnamese rice paper, Indian curry powder and Thai mangoes. On weekends, people from all nationalities come here for their supplies.”

New York: Ten Years On

Ten years on: Breathtaking images from then and now of lower Manhattan reveal how much New York has changed since 9/11

New York’s skyline has dramatically changed in ten years, as is evident in a series of before and after photos.
Streetscapes of sidewalks and people covered in ash clouds and buildings blown out, seen in remarkable images from 2001, have been captured a decade later from the same vantage point.
The most obvious change is the loss of the Twin Towers and the creation of a new building, finally progressing up after years of delay..
